Individual Virtual Counseling
You’ve gone through some hard times just like everyone, but now you feel stuck and unable to persevere. The idea of moving forward is overwhelming. You are always on guard for the next shoe to drop or that you’ll say or do the wrong thing causing everyone you love to abandon you.
You are in a constant state of sadness, loneliness, and anger at your own failings. You find yourself turning inward with thoughts and worries that something is broken inside of you, but you can’t put your finger exactly on why you feel this way. The thought is just there.
I work with people pleasers, perfectionists, and over achievers who have gotten some terrible messages throughout life from family, relationships, school, and society as a whole about who you “should” be. Clients often tell me that they don’t think they even know who they are. You have been told that in order to be loved, you must “behave,” “look a certain way,” and your worth is directly tied to your accomplishments. You have heard that your feelings are unimportant or perhaps “wrong.” As a result of that shame, you have set out to make others happy instead of yourself in the form of caregiving, parenting, high intensity jobs, or compensating with lots of education. In the process, you have buried your own feelings, thoughts and beliefs, and are constantly on the lookout that someone will discover that you are a “fake” or an “imposter.”
Can therapy help?
Individual counseling with a therapist that you feel connected with can help. My name is Meagan, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing individual virtual therapy in both North Carolina and Colorado. I help by creating a space of safety that is accepting and encouraging of differences, and allows you to go through your own courageous process of self-discovery with loving kindness. It’s not just hard conversations and tears - we laugh too! I bring curiosity to the conversation in a playful and creative way that involves visualization, mindfulness, and other tools to allow you the freedom to find yourself. I weave modalities such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) together using a person centered approach and a trauma informed lens to help you discover important insights and essentially feel like you can handle the bad with the good.
Clients who work with me experience the lessening of difficult emotions, thoughts, and sensations from the past, and a new capacity to tolerate discomfort moving forward. You will discover how openness to your own discomfort actually increases your ability to be kind to yourself and others, which results in less negative self-talk, and better relationships. This process of finding compassion for the Self, letting go of what is not serving you, and moving forward with understanding allows you to open your heart to positive experiences and relationships.
